seth troxler’s play it say it label opens up 2018 with another release from the highly regarded ataxia, who serve up their third ep for the imprint. the detroit duo impressed with their previous outings on the label, the supertouch ep back in july 2017 and the acid ep in 2016. since then they have also released on leftroom and nervous and continued their eight year residency at prominent detroit venue tv lounge. their fresh take on motor city techno often comes with flashes of acid and makes cyber punks ted krisko and eric ricker one of the most interesting pairs in the game. opening up the essential ep is ‘quicksand’, an immediately arresting and busy electro track with real machine soul. the bassline bubbles and boils underneath crisp percussion and emotive keys bring a sense of tenderness. it’s a macho cut with robust drums and is sure to win over any crowd. the fresh ‘hot snakes’ is a deep, menacing track with dark bass gurgling beneath the airy hi hats. frazzled synths are dystopian and brain frying, and together the whole thing takes you into hypnotic territory with an intense sense of urgency that is impossible to ignore. last of all is the freakiest of the lot. the brilliant ‘texas is the reason’ has circling bass that is warped and intriguing and will own any club, while the drums drive on and trippy keys are skewed and twisted up top. it’s a truly intense record for late in the night that is sure to become a big tune. this is an expressive and varied ep full of contemporary and innovative detroit house and techno sounds and marks another step in the ataxia story.

halvtrak has gathered a following. the previous releases by the finn on dont be afraid and bakk teased an appetite among techno heads for his detroit infused and texturised sound and unexpected grooves. moving towards warmer tones, his latest output on a new london/helsinki label cold blow enters him further into detroits past. as an unexpected treat, the title track has been re-imagined by the very special chinaski with his trademark ghoul sound so reminiscent of old horror films now blended with sharp electro and ebm vibe. chinaski has been busy of late with a berghain live set as well as his fine rivers end ep on uncanny valley and ghost rider on live at robert johnson. from relentless groove to darker places, this is halvtraks most refined release yet as he becomes an illuminator of his own ascent.

the solar phenomena label welcomes achim maerz for its fifth ep. the hamburg producer is an associate of labels like don’t be afraid, where last year he released his mini-album of rough and ready house tracks that are improvised and innovative. the four cuts he serves up here are just as special and have an ethereal air to them.
in my house opens things up with serene synth work and lush detroit stylings. it’s a deep and widescreen track that encourages you to dream. fresh air is a little more upright, with rattling hits and pixelated, long tailed synths lingering above the rooted drums. as the title suggests, leaving this planet is a cosmic exploration, with ambient keys and meditative atmospheres joined by only the most subtle and suggestive sense of rhythm way down below. last of all is two times, a beautiful deep house track with deft synths drifting, bleeding and wandering off into a starry night sky. all in all, then, these are truly thoughtful house tracks.

five dazzling remixes of population one s classic hippnotic culture lp by the detroit minimalist himself. kicking off with a 20th anniversary mix of rush hour, the track that inspired our company name! big big tip and a great honor.play it loud!objekt: these are wonderful. no surprise though- population one, also known as terrence dixon, offered a first remix of his mysterious, minimal detroit track rush hour for the celebration of the label s 10th anniversary and now blesses us with new takes on five hippnotic culture album tracks. the impressive hippnotic culture lp was originally released in 1995 on the long defunct utensil label, which was run by claude young.

the brilliantly beguiling r-zone series hits release number 20 with another genre defying four track ep by no one knows who. as always, the music looks backwards to go forwards and frantically blends breakbeat, rave, acid, house, electro and techno into wild new forms. the geometry of shadows kicks off with a flurry of pinging kick drums, rushing synths and smeared chords that manage to be physical yet serene at the same time. chrysalis is deep detroit style house with gurgling basslines and warm future soul synths extending off into the cosmos. ship of tears then races through the galaxies as asteroids, shooting sci-fi synths and glassy melodies all fly by in enchanting fashion, acid is buried deep within and the drum programming is busy and direct. the parliament of dreams closes things down with more haunting celestial pads and cold acid lines that are all backed by boom-bap breakbeats. its dance floor euphoria of the highest order once more.

after a five-year hiatus, tartelet mainstay james braun returns with the ep tearjerker, announcing his debut album for 2018. jb (james braun) has been part of the label since its conception in 2007 and has contributed immensely to its development. over the years, his sound has continuously morphed – from cheeky tech house, to emotional detroit-inspired house escapades – always reflecting his originality and worthy musicianship. the tearjerker ep is a testament to jb s musical journey. rooted in classic u.s. house and techno, the ep delivers elaborate melodies not found in earlier productions. the tracks were all produced at the newly opened panalama studio in copenhagen, which jb runs alongside lasse walentin.

ultramajic came into the possession of meticulously dated tapes from 1995 -1998 with sharpie inscription ashtar lavanda. we had never heard this name and google search didnt bring back many results. we had uncovered a hidden treasure of detroit electro. the ashtar lavanda tapes led us on a journey to find out who the producer behind the sound was, and furthermore how did this music never get released?

were super excited to present the latest artist to join the dirt crew stable, french producer sekou babe. he ticked all the right boxes for us with this beautiful debut ep foresight prevents blindness which explores his fresh and vibey outlook on house with sideways glances to smokey jazz, breaks and garage. the a-side lines up three varied tunes. perspectives of the youth and soukoun step in quickly with lively breakbeat rhythms. the first boasting warm soul vocals and steady bass groove, the second a melancholic yet uplifting back and forth between vintage piano and warbling rhodes. treize zero zero trois is a deep and dreamy house jam. cinematic elements infused with punchy percussion and 80s sonic touches add up to good times all round. on the b, our good friend nachtbraker does what he does best, flipping treize zero zero trois bringing the deep, dubby amsterdam vibrations. his version is lush, textural and slightly fruity, with surging synths, tropical percussion and a stomping kick. sekou babe rounds things off with the extravagant crown collection, showing us yet another colour in his musical spectrum. its trip hop meets detroit where warped strings introduce shuffling drums before the track begins to build layering subtle arpeggios, smooth pads, crash hits and a buoyant melody. sekou babe would like to add that all tracks were written and produced by b.b. at 7e republique studio and says thanks to peter, ghizlene, mohammed and florian, you beautiful souls.

get pissed is a french duo known in paris for their popular -wrecka spinazz club- and -belleville boogie- parties that included daniele baldelli, margie, boris from ostgut etc on the bills. they are signing here singular ruff mpc tracks for their debut ep that has an uncommon signature between jazz, techno and deep beatdown. laroye on flipside has been already in the broken beat game for a decade at least. you might remember his three eps on faces records including some kinetic space jazz remix from inverse cinematics better known today as mcde. the french producer now based in brighton delivers something special again, journeying through disco, jazz and those west london signature beats. mgbk001 is an ep of two halves. the a-side bumps with two very deep house jams, whilst the b-side sees a freestyle disco-jazz we call broken beats. music for the mind, body and universal soul!

slow town s 17th release from melbournes luis cl is an ode to analogue jams. the cran town ep shows what luis cl (one half of the zanzibar chanel duo and co-founder of ruff records) is know for: dirty but groovy drum arrangements, analogue synths and dreamy melodies and his kind of lo-fi and blurry mixdowns with definitely some detroit influences. the three tracks were recorded in one take during his studio sessions.
